The English Perennial Garden Installation

Empower
Those Plant Ladies

One of our favorite things to do as Those Plant Ladies is getting together with our all-female installation teams. Our crew consists of our paid industry experts and amazing volunteers. This is when the rubber meets the road and so much education happens! These projects provide us with amazing opportunities for hands-on learning where our TPL Crew can learn skills and techniques to work in their own yards! (Want to be part of our Crew? Go here.)

This featured installation showcases a project full of perennials, blooming shrubs, and DANGER! Just kidding, everyone was very safe but there were definitely some challenges with the terrain for this large installation project. We also tackled a new skill for this project – adding natural stone to an existing retaining wall! Let’s dive in!

Like all of our landscape installations, this dreamy landscape started with a custom digital design from Fawn Renae Designs. This client is an avid gardener who isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty and do some work to keep a full perennial garden looking gorgeous through the whole growing season. She even told us that pulling weeds is like her therapy session after a long day at work! If you haven’t tried it, you really should… we’re adding it to our list of self-care options.

We had some AMAZING volunteers joining our professional team for this job that showed up and showed out! They worked so hard and hopefully learned so much good stuff from tearing out old shrubs, transplanting plants, using our heavy equipment, how to plant a plant, and even some creative ways to spread mulch! This is seriously our favorite part of every installation and we are amazed each and every time that these multi-passionate, hard-working, inspiring, and funny women volunteer their time to be educated and empowered by our team!

Every job has its challenges and this was no exception. The biggest challenge for this job was the slope of the front yard. The largest area of installation was a natural bed off to the right side of the yard. The front yard sloped across the lawn down towards this large bed and continued sloping throughout the bed. To top it off, we had had quite a bit of rain in recent weeks and things were still a bit slick in our Carolina red clays.

Our unofficial motto is “everything is figure-outable”! Sophisticated, right? But it’s true! We used a lot of brains and a good bit of muscle to use our large equipment and smaller equipment like wheelbarrows and pitchforks to get the mulch in place and move some really large boulders from the back of the property into this bed. It was a challenge but our team is never afraid of a good challenge on install day!

We had our favorite Avant Loader 630 from Cooke Rentals but we didn’t feel as safe as we would have liked as we moved down the hill, especially with our volunteers. You can read all about the Avant Loader 630 and get even more details on this specific project HERE!

This project actually took almost three days, one for the island bed with the stone wall, one for most of the plant, and one for mulching, clean-up, reseeding turf, and pressure-washing. When it was all finished, our clients were left with their Custom Plant Care Guide LINK. We visited again one week later to ensure things were looking healthy and happy!

We can’t wait to check back in throughout the seasons as these perennials bloom and grow into the perfect English-style perennial garden!

Since all of our landscape installations start with a digital blueprint from Fawn Renae Designs, everything was customized based on their vision and preferences. Since the homeowners are big into gardening + keeping their grass in tip top shape, they spent the entire day working with us! We just love it when the homeowners are involved to whatever level they want to be.

The design was created to highlight the architecture of their home and create a more polished look in the sloped areas. Once you have the design from Fawn, you have the unique experience to have your designer on-site and bring us in to create the look in real life. If you want to learn more about the how the whole process works, we’ve outlined everything on our website.
