It’s so hard to find color in our mid-winter landscape. Sure, there are the plain-Jane evergreens out there to choose from and they’re better than looking at bare twigs. But what if we told you there was a large, evergreen tree that could bring loads of gorgeous yellows and golds to your winter landscape?

Meet the Donard Gold Monterey Cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa ‘Donard Gold’) from Monrovia®. The color on this plant is to die for. New growth emerges with shades of lemon yellow, chartreuse, and bright green while the inner layers turn to darker shade of green. Dark, amber-colored branches pop against these greens and yellows. This large, conical evergreen tree reaches 20-30 feet tall and 8 feet wide making it the perfect shape for privacy screens and hedges, landscape backdrops, or as a specimen planting.

We love the unique and low-maintenance plants that Monrovia produces and they were so kind to send us a sample specimen of this plant. The fun is in the growing process, watching plants mature and change through the seasons. This plant is no different! It’s stunning already and we can’t wait to see this plant reach its full potential once established in our landscapes.

GROWING CONDITIONS FOR THIS PLANT INCLUDE:

  • Hardy in zones 7-10
  • Provide full sun
  • Provide shelter from harsh winds
  • Moist, well-drained soils with regularly watering through the first few growing season. Tolerates mild drought once established.
  • Should not require major pruning to retain its cone shape if given enough space for its mature size
