Earth Day has been celebrated since 1970 with a mission to diversify, educate, and activate the environmental movement worldwide. So how can you get involved? Here’s what every plant lady should know:
1. Plant a variety of plants!
Biodiversity is important to our world. So don’t be afraid to mix up the plants in your landscape! Choose plants that bloom at different times and in different colors, plants with different leaves and different branching patterns. Not only does that add interest to the landscape but supports more wildlife.
2. Convert a bit of lawn into planted beds.
While we are definitely turfgrass fans here and know it serves an important role for our families, it can also be a desert of resources in our ecosystem. If there’s a corner of lawn you don’t use for recreation, plant a flowering shrub or tree there and add mulch to provide resources for our insects and habitat for birds.
3. Spend time outside.
Nothing brings appreciation for our natural world like breathing fresh air, listening to the wildlife, looking at flowers and watching the butterflies, and yes, getting your hands dirty. The more you and your family engage with nature, the more you will want to do to support the world around you.
4. Add a sustainable practice to your life.
Start a compost pile to reduce the waste you send to the landfill. Purchase reusable plastic bags or silicone straws for snacks and travel. Recycle when possible. Spend money with retailers who are committed to sustainable practices.
5. Make small changes.
You don’t have to conquer everything at once or be perfect at anything. Commit to small changes in your life and commit to be open-minded and always learning more. It’s okay to not be perfect. Your efforts make a difference in your family, friends, community, and world.
Happy Earth Day!
